The Renaissance Hollywood Hotel will be host to a B2B for musicians and music business executives hosted by Scion (the car company) on June 17-18, 2010. The event is slated to be an opportunity for music creators to press the flesh with those that are movers and shakers in e-commerce, digital, licensing, legal, and a plethora of industry business categories. This could be a great opportunity to make less-confusing the complex world of the music business. There will be debates, panels and discussions over the two-day event to hopefully shine a light on how to help artists better protect, promote and sell their unique intellectual property. Dey Martin, CEO of mTraks is scheduled to speak on Friday. The event is going to be filmed and posted up on Scion's website www.scionav.com for those that cannot attend. "Scion's goal is to continually support influential and emerging artists with the opportunities and resources that otherwise might be unavailable,” says Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager.

If you are a music fan and love to download music, you know that there are many online digital music service alternatives to choose from. Which service is best for you? Which ones will work with my player? Is the music mine to keep? How many songs do they have? How much would an album of songs cost on iTunes? On Amazon? On Rhapsody? On eMusic? On mTraks? Here is a brief and hopefully easy to understand run-down on costs and service.
- iTunes, the grandaddy of them all, has over 11 million songs and counting. You'll need to download their proprietary software and keep it updated. Purchasing music from iTunes will cost you though. If you have a portable music player that holds 10,000 songs in mp3 format, then you're looking at $10,000 to load it up on iTunes! Oouch! Plan on spending $10.00 per album on average at iTunes. The music on iTunes is restricted to use on your apple device, or on one of your "authorized" computers. For more information go to www.apple.com
- eMusic: After 12 years serving up reasonably priced music subscriptions to the 35 - 50 set, they have recently just about tripled 3X their prices. eMusic’s Monthly Basic Plan offer is 24 songs for $11.99 or 50 cents per song. Emusic has mostly independent music, with recently added catalogs from Sony and Warner Brothers. For more information visit www.emusic.com
BEST DEAL
- mTraks: mTraks will cost you around 10 bucks per month for a subscription or just about 33 cents per song! An album worth of music is just $3.33 on average. www.mTraks.com began as an edgy alternative to eMusic with a subscription plan that gets you 30 songs monthly for $9.99 and is the best deal for near CD quality music downloads on the Net. After 3 years we're still going strong! Over 2 million songs from indie labels and growing. Get 30 free songs for trying the service. There is no software to download. You keep the music . Unrestricted files works on all music players including iPod, iPad and Zune. Go to www.mtraks.com/listeners/new and start today. mTraks also lets unsigned bands upload music to the website free! BEST DEAL FOR MUSIC DOWNLOADS!
HONORABLE MENTION
- Amie Street: A start up service that lets a band's download popularity set the price. .10 per song and up! Plan on paying $6 - $10 on average per album of music. Very limited catalog. For more information visit www.amiestreet.com
- Amazon: Hey, I thought they were a book seller? That's right, but two years ago Amazon entered the mp3 game. They're a great download service in direct competition to iTunes but a little cheaper. .79 per song and up! You'll pay $7.99 - $20 per record. For more information visit www.amazon.com
CHECK 'EM OUT
- Rhapsody: $10 per month for a streaming music subscription. Let's you buy songs a la carte for 99 per song and up. For more information visit www.rhapsody.com

Mother nature dealt a killer blow to several UK acts excited to perform Coachella Music and Arts Festival 2010 at the Indio Polo Fields venue. The Cribs, Bad Lieutenant, Frightened Rabbit and Los Campesinos may all be out or are canceled and will probably be replaced by other acts yet to be announced.
Update: According to a brooklynvegan.com blog post, The Cribs, which includes Johnny Marr, were on the plane and preparing for departure when told that their flight was definitely canceled due to the volcanic activity of the Icelandic volcano.

Over the past 10 years the sales of compact discs, the music industry's major cash crop, have plummeted by over 50%. Eric Garland, the head of digital media measurement company Big Champagne, pontificated at last week's music-industry mecca in Austin, Texas: SXSW #24, that the music industry ought to take a few cues from the porn industry. “They’re not trying to force their customers into a relationship,” he said. “They’re just out to prove on a daily basis that it’s a good deal.”
Porn video sales have also plummeted due to free access over the internet to streaming video. So what IS the answer? It's not a simple solution. But offering great music in formats that will play on all devices at a reasonable price is a great way to start.
Try an mTraks music subscription today. Get your choice of any 30 songs each month for only $9.99! That's just 33 cents per song. The best price for top quality legal music downloads that work on any music player. A really good deal! We will give you 30 free songs right now just for trying us out!

Friday July 31, 2009 Pacific Beach California
Art Openings in Southern California Reviewed

It's awesome to live in a community where art, surf, and beach culture meet. Where top talent in the sporting world of surfing share their many talents in art and music ,or in the appreciation thereof, and enjoy all those things together in a 'mash up.'
That's what happened on Friday evening, July 31 at a Pacific Beach, California establishment called Surf Indian Gallery on Mission Blvd where long board surf professional and budding artist Tyler Warren showed his best works there to an enthusiastic crowd. Music by the DJ Geometric, The Growlers and Japanese Motors were also planned to be part of the faire.
If you are ever in Pacific Beach, I would highly recommend stopping by Surf Indian where classic photos grace the walls along with some great contemporary artwork and some very fine custom surfboards and custom beach wear. Don't forget to say hi to owner/promoter Chris Rule.

We think so. :-)

mTraks was very stoked to support and attend Billabong's Design for Humanity show on June 17th at the Avalon in Hollywood, CA. This is a great cause to provide clean drinking water for sub-saharan Africans. All proceeds from the show went to this cause. Please check the video below which provides a great overview of the event.
