Composers Igor Korneitchouk and William Thomas McKinley with performances by Karen Dreyfus, James Romeo, and Andrew Kohji Taylor

While both composers on this disc share common surface similarities, elements and concerns (both have an open ear, an abundance of craft and a curiosity about the megaculture that surrounds them, and a willingness to explore and employ new techniques) their personal idioms counterpoint each other in at least one fundamental way. William Thomas McKinley, twenty years Korneitchouk’s senior, uses his craft as a tool for expressing the human condition. He communicates a wide range of emotional states and movement. In this regard, he is neo-romantic – at times very lyric and always expressive. McKinley is not averse to classical forms; indeed he uses them too well to ever be mistaken for a composer who rejects formalisms outright. But McKinley builds his music toward the ultimate goal of expressing intense feelings. Conversely, Igor Korneitchouk’s music is often about the exploration of form itself. In his own words: "Although I like 'abstract' music - music in forms like symphonies and sonatas and so on - I've always been disinclined to write in these older prefab forms (its like wearing someone else's suit). I have taken on in my music a sort of Frank Lloyd Wright maxim that the form of a piece of music should match its content or, even better, be inseparable from content. I try to write in a way that pleases both my heart and mind. For me the discovery of form is every bit as much a musical adventure as is the sensual appreciation of its sonorities." For McKinley form well serves content; for Korneitchouk form is content.
