Compiled by DJ Neerav & Andrew, and following on the heels of several successful and highly acclaimed ambient releases, 13th Moon is the first venture for Interchill Records into what could loosely be called 'ambient trance', though only quite loosely as the selection is truly varied but with a common thread.
13th Moon is an album made as much for playing out (i.e. for DJs and the dance-floor) as for relaxed home listening. 13th Moon begins with an Orb sounding 105 bpm dub tune from Finnish act Kiwa and then builds in tempo and intensity, peaking with tracks from Human Blue [Sweden] and Taruna [Bali] The selection then drifs into deeper audio realms and leaves you in a mellow destination at the end of the journey.
There are some fine collaborative tracks on the album: the sublime voice of Irina Mikhailova features in Rescue by accomplished violinist and producer Kenji Williams’ act Aba Structure. Merv Pepler from renowned UK act Eat Static teams up with Will White from the Propellerheads for Another World and pushes forward with their arrangement where others would back away. UK dub genius Ott appears with bassist Chris Barker as Umberloid for their track Neon Tetra – complete with a spanish [bass] guitar solo and unusually, a chorus.
Stone Turns Black is one of the most recent tracks from Seb Shakta’s Kaya Project, and was written during this year’s Haj when the troops rolled into Iraq. Enjoy the moody Arabian sounds reminiscent of Seb’s work with Angel Tears. 2012 from Mystical Sun is a lovely audio destination, delivering a melodic brain massage after the peak of Taruna, and beginning the end of the album. It is worth a listen on headphones. Bluetech’s Prayer for Rain [in dub] juxtaposes his very precise programming with a sweet jazzy Fender Rhodes line, and the result is a mellow ending.
