Three Legged Dog
Three Legged Dog got its start in the North Mississippi hill country where guitarist Jay Lang spent time watching and learning blues from greats like T-model Ford, RL Burnside, and Junior Kimbrough. It was here that Jay learned and refined his distinctive guitar style. After playing in juke joints, local watering holes, and bandstands all over Mississippi Jay moved to western North Carolina to refine his songwriting. After hurricane Katrina hit, Lamar Williamson convinced Jay to move to New Orleans to re-build the distressed city. Within a few short weeks, the current line-up of Three Legged Dog was formed to fill the musical gap left in hurricane Katrina’s wake. Lamar Williamson (bass) is a veteran of the southeastern music scene having played with Pat Puckitt, The Big Bang, and New Orleans-based Jakeleg. Gary Rieger (drums) is a cornerstone in the New Orleans Music scene and has played with Lazy Lester, Coco Robicheaux, Johnny J, Willy Lockett, and Robby Thomas to just name a few. Eric Deaton joins on second guitar. He has played with Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, Afrissippi, Burnside Exploration, Shannon McNally, and most recently, Jimbo Mathus and the Knockdown Society. The band's first cd "Drinkin' and Fightin' Music" contains nine originals and one cover of Skip James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues". They are currently booking shows over the southeastern and Midwestern United States in promotion of this new album.
Their high- octane Blues style is a mixture of both Mississippi Delta and North Mississippi Hill Blues with a little Rock and Roll thrown in. Three Legged Dog has served as a side project for many noted Southern musicians such as Gary Burnside, bass player for the legendary Junior Kimbrough and guitarist for the Burnside Exploration, Cedric Burnside, drummer for R.L. Burnside, the Kenny Brown Band, and Burnside Exploration, and Frank Couch former drummer for Blue Mountain. In addition to having a large roster of notable musicians, the band has also backed up numerous blues acts such as T-Model Ford, Otis Taylor, and Eddie Kirkland as well as opening for national acts like Blues Traveler and the Neville Brothers.
Three Legged Dog’s motto is simple: Balls to the Wall or not at all! Their high-energy shows have been a cross-over success for audiences young and old. As long as people are drinkin’, they’re playin’!
Three Legged Dog has played all over the Southeastern United States as well as opening act for national acts such as Blues Traveler, the North Mississippi All Stars, and the Neville Brothers in festivals, amphitheaters, and music halls. They are currently booking shows in support of their new album “Drinkin’ and Fightin’ Music” which is now available from various internet distributors.
