The Summerlad's been going strong since 1999, refining their razor-edge knack for performing music that hits you in the head, heart and gut. Their impressive instumental sound finds its focus around the engaging baritone of vocalist Garrett McClure, who previously had success with Geffen artists The Primrods.
Fall 2007 marks the release of "City of Noise," The Summerlad's third full-length. This new album is a sonic adventure which draws parallels to headphone classics such as Dark Side of the Moon and Loveless.
The band worked on this album for two years, creating a finely crafted journey for the listener, who is taken on a musical tour of a day in the life of a city. But don't think for a second that The Summerlad is only about drones, atmosphere and high concepts, because you'll get broadsided by what can only be described as the catchiest dance-rock anthem this side of Bloc Party - the City of Noise single.
The soon-to-be unveiled video for the City of Noise single was shot by Hollywood mastermind Brad Rushing (whose credits include Eminem, Moby and, er, Britney Spears and Mariah Carey), and will, without any doubt, knock you flat.
The Summerlad have toured extensively throughout their career from their homebase of Calgary, with appearances at showcases and festivals across Canada such as NXNE, CMW, NMW, WCMA, Pop Montreal and Sled Island. They have made friends with bands from coast to coast and have shared the stage with notable groups such as The Constantines, Enon, Xiu Xiu, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Besnard Lakes and Chad VanGaalen.
The song "Vallée of Cobras" has been licensed for numerous TV programs, including Kyle XY. In November
2007 The Summerlad recorded a live segment for CBC Radio 3.
September 2006 saw the 'Lads begin hosting a series of showcases at the legendary Broken City Social Club.
These monthly events, dubbed RAMP, encourage artists to stretch their limitations and pursue unlikely avenues for creative discourse, be it via video collaborations, radio dramas, or unlikely genre mash-ups. The shows have been a resounding success and have established The Summerlad as a mainstay in the Calgary arts and music scene.
The band has set its sights on touring in the UK and Europe for 2008, along with recording the follow-up to City of Noise and making further inroads into the Vancouver and US West Coast markets. They are emboldened by the sonic opportunities provided by the recent additiion of the lovely Ms. Liz Collins on keyboards and vocals and are set to take on a new level in their already ambitious sound and career.
