Regina has produced many talented musicians over the years and Sylvie finds itself positioned squarely amongst those ranks. Featuring members of the recently disbanded Despistado, Sylvie is no stranger to the Canadian independent music scene.
Although the band consists of the generic two guitars, bass and drums, listeners and witnesses to their live show are exposed to an experience altogether new. Their ability to layer individual sounds to create the single idea of a song has been capturing audiences wherever they play. Sylvie's members include singer/guitarist Joel Passmore, bass player Riva Farrell Racette, guitarist Chris Notenboom, and drummer Jeff Romanyk. Passmore, Racette, and Nottenboom have been playing together for six years. Sylvie has played with such notables as Death From Above 1979, the Smugglers, Hot Hot Heat, and the Constantines.
In 2003 Sylvie's drive and hard work paid off with a nomination at the Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA). Their album I WISH I WAS DRIVING was nominated for outstanding independent album of the year. This category included other artists such as Corb Lund, the Be Good Tanya's, and the Swollen Members. Sylvie also played at the MuchMusic/Exclaim showcase, as well as the industry awards show.
Since then it has been nothing short of a whirlwind of activity for Sylvie. In 2005 alone, they have showcased at NXNE, toured across Canada with Wintersleep and Uncut, have an upcoming tour with Controller Controller and will be performing at Pop Montreal.
The attention the band has received has also driven them back into the songwriting process. They are recording a new 12-song full-length record with Juno award winning producer Brandon Friesen out of Studio 11 in Winnipeg. Sonically the album proves that Sylvie is a band that has chemistry between members, and a drive to stay creative and fresh.
This new album, entitled AN ELECTRIC TRACE, was released on October 25, 2005 through Smallman Records.
Since its release, the band has received accolades from sources such as Exclaim, The Toronto Star and Now Magazine. They have co-headlined showcases at both of this year's NXNE and CMW Festivals, and were recently awarded the CBC/Galaxie Rising Star Award at NXNE.
They are presently in and out of the studio, laying the bed tracks for their next release
