Long lost psych poetry album from legendary Beach Boy song-writer
STEPHEN JOHN KALINICH
- In His Own Words -
“I was born in Endicott, New York and grew up in Binghamton. I was not a very good student in school and I was never satisfied being at home. I wanted to travel. At 13 or 14 I stared writing poems and articles about World Peace. Very early I wanted to be an influence for peace and good in the world. I was drawn towards Rock Music and the Beach Boys and the Beatles and P.F. Sloan, but I also was heavily influenced by many rock n roll acts. Probably P.F. and his "Eve Of Destruction' influenced me more than any other song except "Let Me Be," also written by P.F. Sloan.
Anyway I came to California around 1964 or 65. I just came for summer vacation. I was going to college in upstate New York at SUNY (which was called Harper College then), in Binghamton, New York. Before that I went to Syracuse University and majored in Philosophy and pre-med. I started writing poetry and songs mostly about World Peace and World Problems.
I was very involved in the Vietnam period; my songs and poems were against the War. I loved California so much that when I tried to go back to school in New York I kept longing for California, so I transferred UCLA.
Then I was writing a lot of poems and songs. Playing the Troubadour club and places like that. I got a musical partner named Mark Buckingham. His full name was Mark Lindsey Buckingham. We wrote a demo, "Leaves of Grass," which was inspired by the famous Walt Whitman poem "Leaves Of Grass" and I started taking demos around.
One place I went was Brother Records. That is where I met the Beach Boys and Brian and that is where I was signed to a recording contract and a publishing contract around 1966. That is how I started working with the Beach Boys. I hit it off with Brian right away and Carl and Dennis. Carl Wilson produced a record for me and my first song that came out was "Little Bird" and "Be Still," that I wrote with Dennis on the Friends album. I recorded A World of Peace Must Come album at Brian's house in Bel-Air in 1969.
This is too difficult to talk about myself. My belief is that grace does the work and that we are channels of love and the one creative force. Peace must come out of that consciousness. I hope the thoughts and poems in this album can touch the world. The good we do each day matters.
The best thing I can say about a World Of Peace is this:
It is not my own I seek
but Grace and truth for all of us
within us
to be liberated
in a world where people do not have to cheat or steal
because they are aware
Of the MIRACLE ....the ABUNDANCE.
I believe we can live this way
and I am learning to forgive those lost souls
who cheat mostly themselves
because in their own authenticity only
can they be happy and fruitful
and be a blessing to the planet..
cut the diseases and illness
that rises out of self.
This is the solitary voice
of one crying in the wilderness
A World of Peace Must come…
must it not...
The folly of the age is
that achievement or anything outside ourselves
can bring lasting happiness.
a sham from the start
a false path
a dead end road
the chorus of hungry starving people
as we gorge ourselves on delicacies
that are barbaric
and must surrender to the peace
that passes human understanding..
the peace that is all things...
Throwing poems from cliffs
and edges of mountains
that must be felt and lived.
I cry out for man to come forth
woman to shine.
Now is the time
LIFE BEGINS
A WORLD OF PEACE MUST COME...
