SLash Orchestra was the spawn of Konrad Kinard and drummer James Lo (Live Skull/Chavez) in New York. First performances took place in illegal bars in Lower Manhattan Brooklyn and then at the Kitchen , sharing the night with Chritian Marclay in the winter of early 1989.
Conceived as a media band, the performances included ambient video lighting and solos played by TV remote controllers, laser discs and CDs sampled in real time, and controled through home made MIDI systems or computer interfaces. Eventualy the band toured Europe, and released on Sub Rosa in the Nineties as a four piece with producer and electronic artist Steve McAllister (producer -Corrosion of Conformity / Glen Branca/ Virgil Moorefield) and guitarist Wayne Frost (Blastula/Cartesain Lover).
This is the first release that is now out of print. Produced as a CD without a cover, the CD face on the white tray was the design. This caused consternation with record store rackers.(It was also not released for long box racking that was popular then)
The release contains four song type tracks . Track 5 is called "Tone Prose (300Baud)"
which is what may be one the earliest uses of a modem sound in a recording. In this, the track is not only a sound piece but it includes text that can be downloaded into a computer through your telephone receiver (while holding it to your stereo speakers and playing the track). The stories are personal anecdotes from Kinard and Lo.
Track 6 is raw material with an introduction located in a bowling alley in New York, that asks you the listener to try out the sampling style for yourself.
Released origianlly on Bean Creek Recordings, thei CD is now a part of the Incinerate Medai catalogue.
