Davidson's "Mandala" reveals a voracious musical curiosity and a worldwide range of influences and musical styles.
Mandala, a Sanskrit term, refers to a complex circular design used as a symbol for meditation. A mandala consists of four circles that connote the stages through which a meditating person must pass to achieve enlightenment (James Gavin, 2003).
Mandala for Chamber Orchestra, composed by Davidson in 1979, is in four movements and played without any pauses between movements. Davidson’s Mandala traces a process of spiritual enlightenment from its beginning to its end. "Awakening" evokes our first awareness of life around us and of the vitality of nature. "Dance" takes place after one is awakened to the vibrancy of life. "Processional" symbolizes a sacred procession of those who have been enlightened and wish to celebrate a newfound connection to the Divine. "Toward the Inner Temple of Light" is a journey back to one's inner self after one has become enlightened.
Roger Davidson is an eclectic and prolific composer, pianist, and arranger whose experience spans the classical, jazz and international music worlds.
