Celebrity "djs" wish they had the pedigree of Philadelphia's Pink Skull. A proud papa of the Rebel Capital's indie dance scene, Julian Grefe was a turntable resident at powerhouse parties Making Time and [click], with a punk and raver past. After a stint with French Kiss art poppers S PRCSS, Grefe paired with fellow Space 1026 vet King Honey behind a mixing board to produce Aspera's 2004 organic synth masterpiece, Oh Fantastica, and a jack-of-all-musical-trades was born.

To beef up the programming, Grefe teamed with 611 Records alum and longtime pal Justin Geller (JG). The newest collaboration with his GFS Productions cohort, and a mutual love of early avant-techno, eventually spawned electro-psych outfit Pink Skull in the summer of 2004. With Philly friend Ian Kelley (DJ Diabolic), Pink Skull released Blast Yr AKK, a druggy disco soundtrack of industrial strength guitars, understated house, and post-punky Krautrock, with a slick new wave finish.

The success of Blast Yr AKK paired Pink Skull on stages and in dj booths with Les Savy Fav, The Faint, Vitalic, Optimo, The Cure, Cut Copy, Tim Sweeney, 2 Many DJ's, Derrick Carter, Hot Chip, Simian Mobile Disco, Mstrkrft, Digitalism, Guns 'n' Bombs, and BOYZNOIZE to name a few. Grefe and Geller were tapped to curate the inaugural mix for renegade dance purveyor RVNG INTL's series of hotshot dj compilations, and have remixed left-of-center dance tracks for Spank Rock, Plastic Little, and Martin Matiske.

Now sans Kelley, S PRCSS comrade Daneil Mazone, Billy Dufala of Man Man, Jeremy Gewertz of Jai-Alai Savant and An Albatross, and Boy's Life-r Jon Anderson, now of White Whale, contribute to the Philly outfit's first full-length album.

Mastermind Grefe describes their sound "as a tribute to the birth of the electronic music dance subculture in the early nineties… when JG was selling acid and e and we lived in weird rave caves and still went to punk shows… the first time we heard "Don't Laugh" and the first time we heard Silver Apples blah blah blah. A time when electronic music was new and limitless and a house record didn't have to be between 126 and 130." Pink Skull's latest mix for the masses updates the four-on-the-floor sound with quirky tech house, varietal acid, and retro sounds just trashy enough to keep it freaky.
