Before that August 1960 session, Spann have recorded once in his own name. Just a few weeks before the Candid date, he made a considerable impression on the audience at the Newport Jazz Festival.

This album reveals an artist who at 30 possessed a full grown style and presents what was best and most characteristic in the music of Otis Spann.
