Mortimur is a three-piece instrumental outfit hailing from Columbus, Ohio. The trio creates seductive soundscapes by intertwining patterns of rhythm and melody into a polyphonic storm. Recognizing each other through constant communication, their music forms a picture or narrative without the constraints of a lyrical lean. This magnetic sound is characterized by its yearning melodies, ethereal swells, and lilting waves of drumming. The sound combination creates a counterpoint or axis for their instruments to exist both separate and together, spanning audible space with bold frequency and dynamic tonal and volume range. Hypnotic rumbles of trance like patterns, moody triplet based polyrhythms, and cacophonous dissension all signify Mortimur's bacchanal reverie. Notable influences consist of bands such as: Don Cabellero, King Crimson, Slint, Laddio Boloko, Can, and Godspeed You Black Emperor. Each of these bands has created something uniquely their own, simultaneously defying musical categorization while defining modern sound. A testimony to new music; Mortimur is determined to discover and claim ownership on fertile ground.
Jeremy Scott Vogel: Somerset, Ohio. In 1987 Scott started playing snare in the Marion Cadets drum corps. He would later go on to flag team (just kidding.) Shortly afterward, Scott started making lo-fi recordings, a lot of which resemble what you might hear a moment before dying. He has been making several recordings a week for 15 years and remains a true audiophile. His drumming style is both ambidextrous in technique and versatile in style. If the saying is true that the drummer makes the band, than this band has indeed been made. From a rigid percussion background to the modern experience in sound, Scott epitomizes what it is to be an influential drummer. Giving headway for the other players, Scott lays groundwork full of body and texture that is not usually prominent in rock music.
David Earl Barnes: Fort Wayne, Indiana. When Dave first came about he wore overhauls and sported what some might call, "The Amish Burn Victim Beard." To his credit, he played a mean git-fiddle… and that's exactly what it was to him. Playing like a drunken heart derelict, swimming in pools of his own masochistic fervent, Dave combines playing styles with intense musical determination. Seamlessly, Dave intermingles rhythm and lead guitar into a morphing procession of melodies, freely exploring and elevating songs beyond the solid platform of the bass and drums. Dave now shaves and has updated his clothing style.
Bobby Silver: Akron, Ohio. Bobby does not know which way is up, I guess being easily distracted could be a blessing. Bob knows no boundaries and sees music as being an overall good thing for everyone involved. He started playing punk at the tender age of fifteen and gradually graduated to hard-core, death metal, hip-hop, and electronica. Mortimur works on several levels for Bob satisfying musical desires far and in between. A culmination and abandonment of styles, Silver has defined the instrument for himself, producing a multi-faceted four string finger-picking approach, full of rich poly-tonal bass pulses that drive the band forward, careening into darkness, and fluttering into the light.
Mortimur's lips are hermetically sealed. The trinity's first full-length self-titled audible requisition is impervious to external influence. As to say, the best thieves never get caught. The mystery is in their hands and the ears of their listeners. Musical deviants by nature and truth Sayers in the world of independent rock and roll, Mortimur illuminates the strength of innovation in a world of fraudulent popular radio play while still remaining assessable to true music lovers.
