This is no ordinary band. These are no ordinary pop songs.
Grandmaster Gareth has achieved so much for such a young man.
In fact John Peel once crowned him “the new God”, which is praise indeed for someone who feels at odds with most things in life and has been described as the UK equivalent of Larry David.
His band, Misty’s Big Adventure are revered and cherished by contemporaries and critics alike, indeed the irksome phrase ‘National treasure’ has been used on more than one occasion, but certainly not by the band.
They have produced two hugely critically acclaimed albums, The Solar Hi-Fi System and The Black Hole, toured extensively around Europe and have been personally invited to tour with bands such as the Magic Numbers, the Zutons, the Guillemots and the Pipettes.
Their last single Fashion Parade, featuring Noddy Holder and released on Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best Singles Club, a biting satire on copycat bands and general blandness in music, was voted Track of the Year by the subscribers to CMU Daily and by musicOMH.com, and the video has now been viewed over 65,000 times on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxZ-n4Is684
It was also voted into the top 10 of the Festive 50 at the end of last year.
They had their set at the much lauded Green Man Festival broadcast on Radio 1, in fact they went down so well that they have been asked back to appear on the main stage this year. Last December they were asked by Stuart Maconie to be the special guests at the first ever Freaky Night Out that was broadcast live from the Glee Club in Birmingham on his Freak Zone show on BBC 6Music. They have also recorded sessions for Rob Da Bank, Tom Robinson, Phill Jupitus, and John Kennedy and Claire Sturgess at Xfm, in fact Claire voted The Story of Love as her track of the year in 2005.
In March 2003 Grandmaster Gareth released ‘An Introduction to Minute Melodies’ on Awkward Records, a compilation of 30, minute-long songs and tunes - this is what first caught John Peel’s attention and he went to play 17 of the 30 minutes, plus a specially BBC-commissioned 17-minute long epic ‘Monster Melody’. The second edition of Minute Melodies, ‘The Party Sounds of Grandmaster Gareth’ was released last year on SL Records.
Besides all this, Grandmaster Gareth has somehow found the time to work with various artists he admires including Bentley Rhythm Ace, Broadcast, Pram, Plone, Kimya Dawson, Jeffery Lewis, Brute Force and Damo Suzuki from Can.
And now finally, the very eagerly awaited next album from the band is ready to be released in Autumn on their own Grumpy Fun Recordings. It’s called Funny Times and with a slight whiff of Joe Meek, it’s their best work to date. Of course it is, do you think a band like Misty’s would get worse?
You can see the band at various festivals this autumn and they will embark on a huge UK tour throughout September, October and onwards with some dates supporting DODGY in November.

“Misty’s have a knack of being not so much bittersweet as, uhm, seethingjoyous. They can be world-weary without being depressing and relentlessly fun without being twee all at once….so unbelievably joyous that it’s like some alternate universe where the government has put an official limit on fun only for Misty’s to protest against it by stealing a year’s worth of the fun ration books and turn them into trumpets…They’re mesmerizing” – Drowned in Sound
"Misty's are the best thing I've come across in ages, they make me wanna make a new album everytime I hear them, they make complicated music seem easy and if Gareth was fit I'd shag him" - Dave Maccabe, The Zutons
