Extravagant, unclassifiable and a compulsive melomaniac, Maxi’s musical path is not an easy one to define. He worked as a DJ in several clubs, but he identified himself mainly with the music from the 60s and 80s. He wanted to study composition with Manuel Vega –pianist for Compay Segundo and arranger for many of the musicians of “Buena Vista Social Club”-, so he had to travel to Italy where the Cuban was living. There he meets Francesco di Mauro and they form the duo Roy Vedas. With the piece called “Fragments of Life” and its retro-futurist video, Roy Vedas introduces a sound effect never heard before: the autotuner. They travel to London and sign a contract with Mercury Records, and create a big impact on the local audience. Cher asks them to collaborate with her new work, Believe. On tour in Europe, the duo performs in Turkey – where they were the opening act for the Rolling Stones-, Greece, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. In London they opened for Mandes, Pulp, Mogwai and Guided by Voices. One day, at the hairdresser’s, Maxi meets the members of The Beta Band and ends up playing football with them, Jarvis Cocker and Robbie Williams – who was still not that famous yet- every other weekend in the outskirts of London. Maxi spends long evenings talking about music with Mark Smith, leader of The Fall, whom he had met through the British DJ DOSE. The duo splits up and Maxi Trusso keeps going, only this time in the fashion world and investigating new musical styles.
Back in Italy he performs, improvises and rehearses with members of the cult band Gobling, from Dario Argento’s films. He then travels to Brazil, where he performs with Marky Mark and some of the member of Os Mutantes. Back in Buenos Aires he meets Argentinian musicians and makes some experiments with them, which lead to his first CD as a soloist, Leave Me and Cry.
