AbSTraKT | BlaK

-produced by legendary jazz keyboardist Marc Cary and Shon 'Chance' Miller, is a musical exploration in the spirit of the Black Arts, Black Power and Free Jazz movements of the 1950's through 1980's. This music was commissioned by the Studio Museum of Harlem, for use as a soundscape for their April 5th - July 2nd retrospective exhibit of abstract visual art by artists of these movements.

Producers Cary and Chance used this opportunity to create Abstrakt Blak as a unique afro-urban montage that is free from the constraints of commercial music categorization. AbSTraKT | BlaK is jazz, gogo, hip-hop, afro-Caribbean, bebop, ambient, spoken word, R&B and more. From track to track, genre is in the ear of the beholder.The eclectic tracks of Abstrakt Blak draw on all forms of black music, with the ‘clavé' serving as a constant unifying force.

The lead single for the album, "Dream Deferred" features the poem by Langston Hughes set to music, with spoken word performed by ‘Chance' along with subtle, yet powerful, vocals by Marc Cary, revealing a compelling new dimension to this keyboardist's talent. The first in a new creative boutique series, AbSTraKT BlaK is being simultaneously released and promoted with Marc Cary's new acoustic jazz trio release titled, FOCUS. Upcoming on Abstrakt Blak, volume II, contemporary poets of the new Harlem Renaissance will tribute Langston Hughes, poet laureate of the 1920's Harlem Renaissance, with spoken word versions of his poems set to music by Marc Cary and Shon 'Chance' Miller.
