Malcolm Palmer is a singer, songwriter, poet, actor, playwright and transient hip-hop troubadour. Created in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he is currently creating in Chicago. He was awarded an Artist Fellowship Award from the Illinois Arts Council in 2002 for an obscure folk record called THE PLEASE ALBUM. He wrote and recorded, but never released, three other compelling full-length records of the obscure folk variety: HANG A ROPE ON DOWN, THE MORTICIAN and THIEVES AND SLAVES.
Palmer says, "I believe that hip-hop and folk music are similar in that both were created by and exist for the people: the many neglected and not the few privileged." Grounded in that belief, his music has evolved. He has managed to retain the purity of folk storytelling and draw upon the raw truth of hip hop. In a truly inspired leap of creativity Palmer has brought the craft of songwriting in the folk tradition to that of hip-hop and has created a sound that, like the artist himself, defies labels.
To that end, Palmer's BETWEEN THE WOMB AND THE TOMB (2005, Orange Van Records) is the product of this evolutionary labor of love. Conceived of this blend of styles, interpreted by a truly gifted songwriter, the music is intelligent, relevant, beat poetry rhymes, spit on top of acoustic riffs and vocals bursting into satisfying, melodic and memorable chorus.
Malcolm Palmer intends to effect change by reaching out to each of us and casting himself as our reflection, urging us to become who we want to become, deserve to become, are meant to become and urging us to seek and serve a purpose between the womb and the tomb.
