True musician/artists are rare. Self-contained producer-engineer-musician-artists are one-of-a-kind.
A complete virtuoso, M.D. writes, sings, and plays on every cut on
“Ink from My Heart”
“This CD opens the door to my heart, everything I’ve been through”, submits the talented artist.
All the emotions…from the pure joy of
“Happy Mother’s Day” to the undiluted pain on “Father2U” are real:
As real as M.D.’s credentials.
Born into a musical family, M.D. grew up like many young people: without the presence of a father.
It is this fact that fuels his commitment to fatherhood – a commitment he shows everyday as a stay-at-home father to his own son.
M.D.’s dues have been paid in full because he started early, traveling to Japan to
perform at the tender age of 11, after which he embarked on his first tour at 12,
playing in almost every major U.S. city as a young man. “Sometimes I think back and I wonder…how did I talk my momma into letting me go to all these places!”
M.D.’s born talents were recognized by renowned music professor Benjamin Pruitt and he was sent to esteemed Cass Technical High School.
The choice school that produced some of the greatest musicians and performers including:
Diana Ross, Donald Byrd, Ron Carter, David Allan Grier and Gregg Phillinganes.
One of the side benefits of growing up in Detroit, a musical town, often means playing side by side with some of the greatest talents in music.
An accomplished saxophonist, M.D. was blessed to perform with such diverse names as Branford Marsalis, trumpeters Clark Terry and Marcus Belgrave, and artists Fred Hammond, and Paul Anka.
A published songwriter from the age of 16, M.D. hit it big as co-writer of “Exalt the King”, the #1 song for most of 2003 and part of 2004 on Detroit’s primary Gospel radio market.
So with all his talent and experience, why would M.D. tryout for American Idol?
“I saw how the winners and sometimes the losers were having major success as a
result of the show. I saw it as a way to accelerate my career.”
And it started out good as a multitude of over 10,000 people waiting in the cold rain was narrowed down to less than 50 over a 2 day period.
“Most people think that the auditions they see on TV are the first auditions…They’re not. The people you watch who can’t sing…the ones you wonder why in the world they even showed up…they were selected out of thousands of people…all so they could go on camera and make fools of themselves…why?...because it’s a TV show. It’s not about talent until you get to the final weeks of the program.”
M.D. survived through three auditions and all the circus acts to get to the final judge –the executive producer of the show.
“I walked in a room…he told me to stand on the X (the mark on the floor) and sing. I sang ‘Hello’ by Lionel Ritchie.” It was then that he uttered the
words that M.D. will never forget:
“He said…word-for-word…“You have an incredible voice…but you didn’t engage the audience.” I had just been through 10,000 people, 40 degree weather, rain, and 3 auditions over 48 hours to hear I have an incredible voice – and still not be selected? On top of that there was no audience to engage! There were 3 people in the room including the executive producer and one of them was asleep!”
As M.D left the audition room that would
have sent him to sing in front of Simon, Randy, and Paula - He watched as a mime –yes a mime- was put thru.
But now with the release of “Ink from My Heart” M.D. is waking the sleepers with songs that will have even the mimes singing.
With additional musicians whose credits span from Cece Winans to Stevie Wonder -It features the instant classic “Happy Mother’s Day” which is sure to make "Ink from my Heart" a musical offering that will stand the test of time!
“Mother’s Day is the day we set aside to thank the women who brought us into the world.
Now we have a song to commemorate their day."
But the album hotest track is "The Idea" which according to some of the most respected names in the business, stands favorably next to recent hits by Mario and Usher. M.D. finds himself back in familiar territory - with another radio hit.
A man seeking to make a difference, M.D. will dedicate a percentage of every
sale of the new CD to foundations supporting Lupus research to help those who deal daily with this affliction.
"Although millions of people suffer, its still relatively unknown.
I want to do something about that. And this project is my way of
helping…even if it’s just a little.”
Ink from My Heart...from M.D.'s Heart to Yours.
