Lost at Last is a hypnotic mixture of tribal world music blended with the ancient wisdom of the Sufi, Vedic, Native American, Indian, Afro-Mediterranean and Gypsy, combined with various world music styles, pop, rock, trance, house, and folk. They are at the forefront of a genre of music that embraces cultural integration known as, Tribal-Trance-Dance music. This is dance music, with live percussion and drumming a band priority.
Their universal appeal is linked to their trailblazing accomplishment by combining ethnic and electronic music. It's music that ventures into both high-energy dance and ambient realms while reflecting the current global changes, the reality of disappearing boundaries, the cross-pollenization of ideas, and the almost instant access to information. Their music is "borderless" in every sense making them an international band.
Lost at Last was conceived in 1996 in the sensual garden beauty of Maui, where there popularity grew so rapidly that they were inspired to move to the San Francisco Bay area in 1998 to bring their transformational music to a wider audience. Since then Lost at Last has developed an ever growing and devoted following. Lost at Last has successfully united a wide variety of cultures, ages, and musical tastes, with all experiencing something significant in the music. Join Lost at Last as the journey continues...
Lost at Last are three very talented and inspired musicians...
Jaya Lakshmi - Vocals, Keyboards, and Harmonium.
Om - Techno Wizard and Keyboards.
Deva Priyo - Strings virtuoso, Drums, and other instruments.
Jaya Lakshmi is a goddess of ancient trance and channeler of primordial prophecy. Born into a family of musicians, she has a natural talent for creating music. Raised with piano lessons and horses, she began writing songs on the guitar at age 15 and was in a band in high school (Middletown, N.J.) that performed originals and covers of popular folk songs with 4 part harmonies. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1985 with a degree in Anthropology, she moved to rural Western Oregon where she resumed her songwriting and singing, inspired by the lush green forests, misty mountains, and the ring of the twelve string guitar.
After 5 more years of chilly winters, she moved with her 2 year old daughter to the big island of Hawaii. This is where she had the good fortune of meeting Srila Govinda Maharaj, from West Bengal, India, from whom she received harinam initiation and her spiritual name Jaya Lakshmi, which means "victory to the goddess Lakshmi," the Hindu goddess of prosperity. Association with devotees and the majestic beauty of the Island helped to nurture her talent for devotional singing and songwriting.
The Hawaiian islands, being known for their rich spiritual energy, have opened the door to many faiths, which has included a strong Native American presence. Jaya Lakshmi made a profound connection to her own Native American ancestry through traditional ceremony and the singing of their powerful medicine songs on the Big Island and Maui, where she moved to in 1996 with her two daughters.
It was on Maui that she met up with Deva Priyo and Om in 1996 and formed the band Lost at Last, which officially marked the beginning of her professional music career. The vision of the band was to blend ancient and modern music (acoustic and electronica) in a mood of love and devotion, with chanting and devotional singing on top. The formula was bound to make waves. After a few years of flying back and forth to the mainland, the band finally relocated in Northern California and Oregon, in order to keep building their growing fan base on the West coast. Jaya Lakshmi performs as the lead singer and keyboardist, as well as playing the harmonium, 12-string guitar, and various percussions. She is a prominent songwriter in the band, whose first major release, self titled "Lost at Last," came out in August 2001 on RCA/Windham Hill Records. On the side she also works on her own solo projects, including a series of devotional CD's. She regularly leads bhajan and kirtan throughout the West Coast with her fellow bandmates, Deva Priyo, on sarod & guitar, and Daniel Paul on tabla, when she's not too busy with Lost at Last. Her experiences working with other well known artists are developing also, projects that reveal her beauty and versatility as a singer/songwriter, as she continues to blossom as an artist.
Techno wizard... Digital Shaman... Trancemaster... these are some of the ways that people refer to Om. He is the programmer, keyboard player and groove central for Lost At Last. Born in South Africa, he took up guitar at a young age, and took up keyboards later.... At age 19, he left home and college, where he had started to study medicine. "I couldn't quite get into the program there." he says, "I knew a normal life wasn't for me. I needed to explore the world and myself." So he went out to travel the world. And himself! He spent many years traveling many continents and exploring both the outer and inner worlds. He ended up spending 11months in India with an enlightened master, where he received the name Om. "It's a strange name to go around with" he says, "but nothing else seems to quite fit me! At any rate, I'm forever thankful for the experiences."
Om landed on U.S. shores in 1982, and has remained since, his main bases being Maui, and the San Francisco Bay Area. He considers his work to be that of a digital shaman. "When I'm up there on stage, I'm not only doing the keyboard/computer thing, but I'm also channeling energy." He is a spiritual healer, and music is just one of his vehicles. "I believe I've been involved in the healing arts for many lifetimes!" he says. "My life is about spiritual awakening and my work here seems to be about the same. Everything in the world is temporary. I want to express what is eternal... the human spirit. My music, and Lost's music is alchemical, or transformational in nature." Indeed, the name of his record company he created to market his first album was "Alchemical Music." He never did spend much time learning music theory or playing other peoples' music theory or playing other peoples' music. "I get turned on by channeling music. I just get out of the way as much as possible and let it just come thru me. That's where the power of the music comes from! And the fun!"
He released his first critically acclaimed solo new age album "Earth Awakening" in 1990. It is an "Upbeat new age" CD he describes. It was the beginning of his vision to bridge new age music with rock, and later dance music. Since then he was influenced by techno, house, trance, and ambient and has further developed his style.
"Most new age music," he says, "is centered around the upper chakras while most rock and techno is centred around the lower chakras. Trance sometimes addresses some higher and lower centres but it is hard to find music which resonates all the chakras simultaneously. My intention has always been to create this musical experience which opens all the energy centres. Lost At Last is doing this I believe."
Born in Sicily of opera singer parents, Deva Priyo has spent his life creating special musical experiences for the people around him. He has written countless songs and performed for many audiences in Europe, Australia and the United States. Deva Priyo's musical mastery now includes a highly impressive list of instruments, including Sarod, Berimbao, Guitar, Harmonica, Sitar, Marimba, Tablas, Dumbek, Jembe, Congas, and Vocal Cords.
Deva Priyo's career has included many incarnations of quality island bands: Gypsy Moon rocked Byron Bay and Gold Coast for years. Luna Piena brought a unique Afro-Mediterranean groove to Maui and continues to pack in the crowds as it opens for his latest creation: Lost at Last.
