The latest artist on Dirty Water Records has crossed time and space from 1964 Buenos Aires with the finest Garage Punk song ever written: Los Peyotes with their instant classic “El Humo Te Hace Mal”. When we gave a test pressing to a DJ to play in a London bar half the room stood up and applauded at the song’s conclusion. The other half of the room were too astounded to respond...
These Peruvian‐Argentines and their mixture of surf guitar, Tex‐Mex, psyche ‐delic garage and rhythm’n’blues are in the purest tradition of their legendary com patriots Los Saicos. Los Peyotes are five phantoms removed from the mists of time: the howling vocals of David Peyote; the macabre sound of Pablo Bam Bam’s drums. the phantasmagoric fuzz of Rolando Bruno’s guitar; the mesmerising bass‐guitar of Oscar (“feels like shit”) Hechomierda; and the hypnotic farfisa of Victor La Pantera. “El Humo Te Hace Mal” is inspired by the ban on smoking which is becoming more and more prevalent around the world and how fed up they were with coming home after a night out coughing and smelling of cigarettes. But played at an ear‐splitting volume and at 100 miles per hour. (The lyrics are included with the single if you want to sing along!) Currently in the middle of their first European tour, Los Peyotes stole the show when we saw them recently at a music festival in Spain supporting legendary sixties US band The Trashmen.
