Selections from the Jerome Kern classic Roberta and Song Of Norway, with music by Edvard Grieg. The former was a studio cast recording with Kitty Carlisle and Alfred Drake singing the leads and featuring ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes’ and ‘You Were Never Lovelier’. The latter, with the exception of Carlisle who was a replacement for the recording, features the original Broadway cast.
‘Roberta’ was composed by Jerome Kern and the score includes ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes’ and ‘Lovely To Look At’. First seen on Broadway in 1933 it was filmed by Hollywood twice, first in 1935 and then in 1952. The recording featured here was a studio cast recording made in the 1940s headed by star of stage and screen Kitty Carlisle and Alfred Drake (Oklahoma!).
‘Song Of Norway’ premiered on Broadway in 1944, one hundred years after Edvard Grieg, on whose music the piece is adapted from, was born. The selections here are performed by the Original Broadway Cast with the exception of Kitty Carlisle who sings the role of Louisa Giovanni.
