His voice is soulful and unique, his lyrics personal and captivating,
but Joey Ryan might also be the smartest singer-songwriter on the
scene. Unlike many in his field, Joey was on the way to becoming a
neuroscientist : fascinated with the workings of the brain, he was a
straight-A student at the University of California Berkley, about to begin a
neuroscience Ph.D. program. Yet he found himself playing music at
parties and bars, and realised that he couldnt live with himself if he
didnt take the chance to pursue music.
12 months later, after a tough year trying to break into the LA music
scene, and Joey was ready to re-apply to graduate school, to research
addiction and dependence. This time though he got a call from Mophonics
in Venice, CA with an opportunity for one of his songs to be placed in a
television show. Quickly following that were several more opportunities in
film, t.v., and ads, and Joey never went to that first day of class.
A year and a half later, he has become well known up and down the West
Coast in singer/songwriter circles, and music supervisors/pluggers for
big network TV shows are now pursuing him for his music to license. He's
toured both coasts of the US, has a national tour booked for June, and
his successes in TV and film are starting to pile up. Amazingly, he's
done all this without the help of a manager or an agent, but music
management companies and booking agents are starting to get wind of
his successes and word among LA music biz/tastemakers is that he is on
the cusp of breaking.
According to Joey, he's proud of the successes he's had so far (listed
below) but he says, "for the first time I have a record that I am
really proud of and I'm excited that people are starting to take
notice". The perfect storm seems to be taking shape, fueled by some
key U.S. placements, but especially by the Wrigley's Extra uses in the
UK.
