Somewhere between Milwaukee, San Francisco and Chicago
lies sounds that only Jason Todd can hear. After spending time
playing saxaphone in various avant-garde jazz groups, forming
the Milwaukee Creative Music Ensemble and studying multiple
instruments, Mr. Todd would form several different groups. The
one that we're here to focus on is Innerstance.Beatbox.
Drawing it's strength from hip-hop, jazz,afrobeat and beyond,
Innerstance.Beatbox strives to make instrumental soul music. A
previous release on Wobblyhead Records called "All The Little
Boys Do Silly Little Dances," received critical acclaim. There's
no doubt that this one is headed that way and beyond.
From the shuffly funk of "Think Again" to the hip-hop oriented
lockstep of "Burnin'," this offering has more than enough boom-bap
to make you do the robot. "Theme From Bastard Squad"
and "This Is The Power" pulls you in with sounds that initially
come across disjointed, but later giving way to laid-back scratch-laden
melodies. "Helium Disco" is fast becomng a favorite, not
only for it's lazers, but for the infectious chorus. No, we're
notgonna tell you the words, you'll have to go get it, then you
can sing along.
Good times. Textures, melodies, and scratched rhymes. "Your
Eyes Are Like UFO's, My Darling" has all these elements, and
our attention.
