Jazz fusion from the early 70’s.
There are few recordings that are as harmonious and natural sounding as this. A recording that originally had little to no distribution in the United States, Porter Records is proud to be releasing “Counterbalance” on CD for the first time. While it fits with in the realm of jazz, it is much more than just a jazz album. Recorded and release in 1971 and incorporating a Fender Rhodes, flute, guitar, drums and bass, you will find a strong lyrical-ism that isn’t often heard in jazz. A must have for anyone interested in the jazz movement of the 70’s.
Original liner notes
The music presented here is the result of a well planned and well executed recording session, in which we, the musicians, were given complete artistic control. Our goal was to produce an album of high quality; continuity of mood; and to be truly representative of our group as it sounds at this time. We feel the music will appeal to a wide variety of listeners, in which new details should become apparent with each successive hearing, allowing the music to stand the test of time, and sound always fresh. There is a great deal of group interplay in each piece, generally preferred, in this case, to the traditional method of each soloist taking choruses in turn. The compositions are rather freely interpreted, and the players usually base their improvisation on the thematic material, keeping their ears open, and feeding each other new ideas throughout. If the listener should note the influence of folk music from many countries, it will be more than coincidental. The tunes are all quite melodic, and in fact several were originally intended to be vocals and are complete with lyrics. This album is a very dedicated, unpretentious effort on our part, and we are grateful for being able to present it to you.
