It is difficult to categorise the sound of Grey Daturas from Melbourne, Australia, however, they are best described as an improvisational, instrumental, noise-rock trio. Since their earliest shows in 2001 the band has been celebrated as one of the loudest and most uncompromising live acts in their homeland. As for influences, they couldn't be any more varied and include The Stooges, Earth, John Coltrane, Cluster, John Cage, Darkthrone and d.n.a.
The band began improvising live soundtracks to 16mm film projections however, since losing their permanent film projectionist, they have developed a style which works equally well with or without visual accompaniment. Due to the improvisational nature of the band their live shows are where they are best represented and no two shows are ever alike. Whether they are recording or performing live, Grey Daturas aim to create the most ear blistering and earth crushing music possible. For Grey Daturas a major emphasis is placed upon pushing their musical concept at maximum volume.
Since 2001 Grey Daturas have released several recordings including:
* A self-titled CD "Grey Daturas" (Black Mountain / Sonic Advisor - 2002)
* Two live 3" CD EP's "Live Volume 1" and "Live Volume 2" (diagnosis…DON'T! reCoRdings - 2003)
* A second album "Dead in the Woods" (Crashing Jets - 2004).
* A collaborative double CD with Oakland, California's d. Yellow Swans (Jyrk Productions - 2005)
* A live CD EP "All I See Is Nothing" (diagnosis… DON'T! reCoRdings/Black Mountain - 2005)
* A split tour CD EP "Australian Tour EP" (Heathen Skulls - 2005) with d. Yellow Swans, which coincided with the two bands' joint Australian tour in October 2005.
In past Australian shows Grey Daturas have played along side acclaimed artists such as Isis, Electric Wizard, Dismember, Neil Hamburger, Clann Zu, Jakob, Oren Ambarchi (SunnO)))) , d. Yellow Swans, and Kim Salmon (the Scientists).
Touring is a major point of focus for Grey Daturas. From May 2005 to June 2005 the band arranged an extensive two month tour of the U.S.A. which featured 35 shows across 25 cities, playing along side the likes of Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Residual Echoes, Sightings, Yellow Swans, and Coughs. They have also completed their 4th Australia wide tour visiting all major Australian cities including: Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart, and Perth. From here, Grey Daturas are putting the final touches on their 2nd overseas tour for March 2006, returning to the U.S.A. for the SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas, as well as additional show on the West and East coasts of the country.
