2001: The airwaves are full of UK Garage and soon-to-be-forgotten boy and girl-bands. Robin, Joe, Jef, G and Garo have spent the past year deep in the countryside building a studio, starting a record label, running a festival and writing a set of songs with inspiration far from the current climate: Legends like Neil Young, Nick Drake and The Band, and more recent American drifters like Grandaddy and Mercury Rev. Word of mouth soon spread about the band and their songs leaving onlookers wondering how such a young band could sound so classic. Goldrush released their much-anticipated debut single in April of that year, the now famed "Same Picture" which saw the band sign with Virgin and begin the long slog into super stardom. The band have toured with likeminded groups such as Electric Soft Parade and Elbow until it came for them to lay down the foundations of their debut album "Dont Bring Me Down" at Abbey Road over the Christmas period .
2002: New year always beings in new dreams and the year that followed has been a massive success, with the band touring with heroes and gurus Flaming Lips. Along with this honour the band have been busy carving out a niche for their own, with constant trucking and touring from one end of the country to another. It wasnt just their own driving seats that Goldrush found comfort in, as the lead single from the debut album "Wide Open Sky" found itself on car stereos everywhere winning playlisting on Radio 2, BBC 6, Evening Session and XFM. The album followed suit with acclaim from all directions and work on the next has already begun with the band constantly writing and recording in their second, or possibly first home Truck Studios. In October 2002, the relationship with Virgin came to an amicable end, with both parties deciding that they just weren't suited to each other, what with the lack of "urban" influence in Goldrush's music and all....
To many onlookers this would seem to be the beginning of a slow decline, but to us (Truck) and them (Goldrush) it was a perverse step forward. Goldrush the went on to record their greatest material to date, which saw the light of day on the 20th of January 2003 in the form of the "Extended Play" mini-album. The seven tracks include production duties from Phil Vinall, Lenny Franchi and Dave Fridmann.
In March 2003 founder member, bassist and keys player Jef, left the band. 5 years had taken their toll and he needed to do something fresh. He's still involved with Truck here and there and Goldrush wish him well! After much soul searching over the future of the band two lights apeared apon the horizon. The first being Mark Gardener, formerly of Ride. He was looking for a backing band, and some like minded fellows to record with. the band having all been Ride fans in their younger years jumped at the chance. The second filip came in the form of their old tour manager, whom it was discovered could play the bass parts to all their songs and was the obvious choice to replace their departed bretheren.
Roll on dates with Mark Gardener and Truck Festival, and everything was rosy again. In September 2003 the band, their soundman Stuart and Mark Gardener departed for the USA. A tour taking in Chicago, Cambridge, Cleveland, Detroit, Hoboken, Philadelphia, NYC and Toronto preceded a couple of weeks recording in Casadiga with the legendary Dave Fridmann. Some from themselves and some for Mark. After that it was off way out west to do dates in LA, San Francisco, San Diego and Phoenix. then it was time for a *short* plane ride over to Hong Kong for the Rock-It festival, where they played with Six By Seven (who played Truck in 2000) amongst others. More planes and its time for NYC again and a couple of dates with their friends The Butterflies of Love. Phew!
Into 2004 and Goldrush are back in America, recording and playing a few dates in California and at South By Southwest. An EP called "Ozona" is slated for release in July.
