Geography has forged an individual style by focusing on elements of indie rock and the noisier side of hardcore rather than any metallic or nostalgic leanings. The band’s propensity for experimenting with rhythmic syncopation lends an aspect akin to math rock while their attention to melody pulls the sound away from being indulgently technical. Topped off with gruff, emotive vocals, that never quite stray into all out screaming and adept guitar work, Geography has most definitely become a band impossible to classify.
In the last three years, Geography has played over 200 shows in 16 different states with acts as diverse as: Hawthorne Heights, Minus the Bear, Arms Bend Back and Lovedrug - and has no intention of stopping anytime soon.
Geography has decided to play rock and roll the real way -- by playing rock and roll. They’ve come unarmed in terms of business acumen. With live performances often ending in broken equipment and bloody appendages, Geography are poised to piss on your parade.
“It may have some emo elements, but it sure ain’t wimpy – the guitar shards and vocal screams toughen things up, Fugazi-style.”
- Greg Prato (All Music Guide)
"Thought provoking titles enhanced by furious throbbing rhythms, the guiding hand of Sadaharu guitarist Jeff Briel keeps the chaos in line."
- Joe Viglione (All Media Guide)
Geography is:
Jonathan Ahn (bass & vox)
Joshua Emery (guits & vox)
David Rath (guits & vox)
Thomas West (drums)
Since their inception in fall 2001, Geography has created and distributed aggressive music that is as piercing as it is frail--a nod designed to eviscerate. This release "Life In Binary" (produced by Jeff Briel of Sadaharu) is also the first to feature Joshua Emery in the primary role of vocal excursions--proving to be a new and welcome spin on the band’s ever-evolving sound.
