In 2005 the then 23-year-old Simon Aurell left his native Sweden and moved to London, armed only with a headful of songs and a laptop on which to record them. A cdr of 4 songs was duly produced and as Simon sold or gave them away people began to sit up and take notice. A band was assembled with country music aficionado Justin Finch (bass), multi-instrumentalist Leon Beckenham (Keys, Trumpet), Mark West (guitar), Cathy Lucas (violin) and Amos Memon (drums). Gigs followed, including prestigious support slots for Guillemots, Semifinalists and Love Is All, for promoters as diverse as White Heat and How Does It Feel To To Be Loved? (to whose compilation album they also contributed a track), and in places as far away as New Zealand. The first fruits of Fanfarlo's recording endeavours were heard with the release of the single 'Talking Backwards', to be followed by an album next year.
Fanfarlo create soaring orchestral pop songs possessed of the same driving intensity as The Arcade Fire, showcasing Simon's pure, crystalline voice and his gift for imaginative instrumentation. Other influences include Sufjan Stevens, Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! while Simon's charisma and boyish good looks are sure to lead to comparisons with that other talented Swede Jens Lekman. A further string to Simon's bow are his intricate pen drawings which feature on the single’s artwork.
With a management deal in their pocket, a bevy of A&R men beating a path to their door on a daily basis, plus talent and songs to burn, Fanfarlo are destined for great things. This is fall in love, take no prisoners pop at its very best. They're out for your heart. Get ready to have it stolen.
