Living Space Records, a fresh imprint from Helsinki, celebrated its first ever release in July 2007 with ‘In Phase’, the debut of Empty Chair, an up-and-coming Finnish production duo already noted for taking first prize at the renowned Ninja Tune / Solid Steel demo contest. Although only self-distributed in very limited numbers, the EP found its way into the boxes of a number of noted underground beat-heads across Europe, including Gilles Peterson, who blessed it with several spins on his Worldwide show. On ‘In Phase’, Empty Chair introduce a string-soaked next generation stereo sound that evokes images of murky British industrial towns, yet adding the clarity of a bright winter day somewhere up in the snows of Finland. Minimalistic yet warm, innovative yet approachable, Empty Chair builds on experimentation vaguely reminiscent of such artists as Thomas Fehlmann, or perhaps Daedalus. A perfect fit for the label’s concept of releasing top quality left-of-centre music, Empty Chair push at the boundaries, but at the same time there is a steady groove deep in the heart of these four tracks. Their heavy downbeat electrofunktional smokey club sound draws inspiration from some of those classic northern-European releases of the the last decade on labels like G-Stone, Klein, Sonar Kollectiv, Compost, Raw Fusion and of course Ninja Tune, but adds a contemporary flourish to put the crew straight into the same creative bracket as the likes of Dabrye or Flying Lotus, and the emerging new beat editors such as Paul White, Hudson Mohawke, Up Hygh and friends. Now available to the world exclusively via Cargo, this limited pressing of 500 green vinyl copies is sure to be a sought-after collectors item before long, with plenty more equally intriguing and innovative sounds to follow from Living Space throughout 2008.
