"Onion"
biography
The hardest question people ask me is ‘where are you from?’ Well, I was born in Washington D.C., and lived my life between Phoenix, Los Angeles, and New York City. But that doesn’t really answer the question, does it…
After moving to LA at 17, I got my start in the music industry working for HITS Magazine, and shortly after co-producing the syndicated rock radio shows Rockline and Modern Rock Live. I had dreams like everyone else when I moved to LA—I wanted to be a music producer. But somehow radio landed in my lap, and I naturally became a producer ---I was just happy that I didn’t have to work at Jerry’s Deli or do porno to survive. Regardless, my desire for creating music was put on hold…
After 6 years in the City of Angels—filled with countless traumas, romances, and magical experiences--I felt like I would never create music unless I left LA; and where else to go but New York, where once again an opportunity in radio came to me. I was hired to co-create and produce a new syndicated radio show hosted by Alice Cooper. (I still write the nightly show as we’re in our fourth year of programming…)
Coming from a long line of Brooklynites, going to New York City felt like going home. But life has a funny way about it… After three years in NYC, I was given yet another amazing opportunity; this time to move to Switzerland and run a recording studio. How could I say NO? I didn’t even understand my real motivation for leaving the United States—and even though I had a feeling Switzerland wasn’t the place for me, I just knew I had to get out of the USA. My 26th birthday was coming, Bush had won re-election, and I knew there was something in Europe for me—I hoped it was inspiration…
Shortly after moving to Switzerland, I went through a series of intense events that filled me with a creative energy I had never before experienced. I met a series of incredibly talented musicians who sparked something in me that I had always known was there. I spent time traveling around Europe and the Middle East, and finally realized I needed to get out of that little village at the foot of the Alps and into a place that was warm to my growing creativity…
During my travels I found that warmth in the city of Barcelona—it had an energy that I had never felt anywhere else on the planet. It’s a city that holds something special, and after being here for almost two years, I STILL can’t explain what it is—but it’s the reason minds like Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Antoni Gaudi came from this place. So I opened a recording studio here in Barcelona called The Emergency Room, and a label called Whatabout Music, where I produce some of the most talented people this amazing city has to offer…
This is my music—it’s an EP called ‘Onion.’ It contains 6 songs I wrote and produced in the early months of 2007. I hope you enjoy Onion. It’s the answer to the question, ‘where are you from?’
