In 1983, the Nashville based theme park, Opryland, decided that Southern Gospel Music was to be added to the Entertainment line-up offered to guests. Thus, the former Cumberland Boys group began. During their sixteen year reign, the group entertained millions with daily park performances, countless appearances on national television. The "Boys" were regulars on shows such as: The Porter Wagoner Show, Hee Haw, Pop Goes The Country, Nashville Now, Prime Time Country and many more. The Cumberland Boys were also frequent guests of the famed, Grand Ole Opry. Furthermore, the group celebrated two, top-10 singles, numerous top-40 singles, two-time Christian/Country Music Group of the Year Award and seven consecutive nominations for the TNN Music City Christian Artist of the Year Award. Then, seemingly in the height of all the success..... Opryland closed.
After several members of the Cumberland Boys went on to pursue other interests, Depp Britt, original member and group tenor, began searching for the right voices to form an all-new group. Depp said, "I kept trying to do all the recruitment myself and wasn't getting very far. Finally, I realized that I needed to make sure a new group was God's will. I turned it all over to him and God blessed me with three of the best singers in the ministry." With the new faces, came a new name for the group..... The Cumberland Quartet!
The Cumberland Quartet consists of: Depp Britt, owner & tenor; John Charles Taggart, lead; Kevin McCaw, baritone; and Ian Owens on bass. After rehearsing and perfecting an incredibly traditional quartet sound, the group soon took to the road in early 1999. During this summer road season, the phone rang with a call from Silver Dollar City, one of America's premier theme parks.
Located in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of Branson, Missouri, Silver Dollar City invited the Cumberland Quartet to spend the fall months singing the gospel to a whole new audience. After an overwhelming positive response, the Cumberland Quartet found themselves calling Silver Dollar City.......... "Home".
Cumberland Quartet fans, more affectionately considered friends, can find Ian, Kevin, Depp and John Charles performing regularly at Silver Dollar City May through December. During the other months of the year, the Cumberland Quartet takes their ministry on the road, traveling all over the United States, sharing God's word through song.
