Singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer, keyboardist, and producer Craig Lyons was born in Youngstown, OH to two musicians in 1981. Surrounded by music his entire childhood, he was bound for a life of songs. To Craig, the only thing that matters in music is honesty. "It's instantly evident whether or not someone's work comes from the soul."
Craig benefits greatly from this perspective, as his music is built on pure passion. This allows him to cross the borders of genres and age groups and widen his fan base without limits.
Craig has recently put together a solid supporting band in his new home town, Cincinnati, to bring his solo project to the stage. After writing, recording, and producing all the parts for an MTV-licensed album released in 2003, he wanted a band to do the songs justice in a live setting. With classical solo trumpet performances for crowds of over 10,000 people, 6 years of rock experience on stage behind a drum kit, and now 2 years of experience as a front man, live performance is in his blood. Craig Lyons has become a well-respected name around his alma mater, Toledo OH, where his bands have performed at virtually every original music venue in town.
Slowly Spinning Around is the album recorded and produced entirely by Craig in 2003. It was adopted by Chicago-based record label Grayscale Records, and Craig quickly became Grayscale's primary artist. Louis Clark of Bunim-Murray/MTV stumbled across Grayscale's website, listened to samples from the album, and served Craig with licensing contracts the next day. Since then, Craig's music has aired on The Real World dozens of times for well over 100 million people worldwide, and is still airing currently. The album has sold 500 copies by word of mouth alone. Craig has recently upgraded his recording studio to a professional quality Pro Tools setup and has continued his path to the mastery of production. Several new songs have been recorded and many more are in the works. These songs are being performed live, which adds an extra incentive to come to his shows. Craig's sophomore release is bound to have a major impact on the industry.
Although Craig avoids drawing influence from his predecessors, he has been compared to Jeff Buckley, Alice in Chains, REM, Radiohead, and Ben Folds. The following are excerpts from reviews of Craig's music on www.garageband.com, where people involved in music listen & rate songs at random.
"...it flows like molten silver. I close my eyes and feel the warmth of sunshine. You won't be amateur too long." Tom Roerig, Music Journalist - DJ Mag, London, UK
"I really love the vocals. You're a talent. A voice to rival Jeff Buckley (maybe even better if you ask me)." Marcus Arvan, Tucson, AZ
These vocals are PERFECT. I can't find anything to provide constructive criticism on. This is air wave worthy, no doubt about it." Matthew Smith, Jamestown, NY
"...amazing production work seems to have gone into every aspect of this song. This is night and day compared to 95% of the tracks on here." CJ Wallis, Vancouver, British Columbia
Following is an excerpt from an album review written by Michael Fisher (Toledo Buzz) regarding Craig's debut release: "Craig pulls influences together that are familiar enough to invite, but unique enough to make you want to stay. Craig is a talented, ambitious young man. Choosing at 22 years old to self produce and be his own session musician, he chooses taste over flash. Sonic layering is employed into each song as opposed to the predictable guitar driven signs of youthful production. Craig is multi-instrumental and handles all duties on this 10 song album. One listen to the disc and you realize that you know much about Lyons already. He always wants more. He wants to know he earned it by his own merit."
