Upon first meeting Chip Shelton in the summer of '06, the thing that struck me was the warmth of his personality. That warmth radiates throughout his music. To see Chip in concert is to see an artist who genuinely loves what he does. The way he interacts with his audiences turns even the most casual listener into a finger-snapping, head-bobbing jazz fan.
From the opening notes of "Recordame", a latin-flavored tribute to jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson, through the old school stylings of "Salt Rhythm" (think the Jimmy Smith Trio) to a moving tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this CD is, dare I say it, a masterpiece!
Whether on flutes, tenor or soprano saxophones (on several tracks, Chip plays rare,
antique saxophones), Chip is, and will be, a force to be reckoned with in the jazz world.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Chip Shelton's Peacetime!
Dr. Nick

This studio recording features various members of Chip Shelton's working band called PeaceTime. Producer Kenny M dubs this the best Chip Shelton release in ten years. The music is steeped in feelings and imbued with memories, right from the opener, “Recordame” (Remember Me).
Chip’s composition “Imbued With Memories” recalls a line from a college fraternal hymn: “college days swiftly pass, imbued with memories fond”… The bass plays a line that remembers favorite works of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders.
Antique tenor and soprano saxophones in the key of C are added to Chip’s usual use of End-Blown Flute and Piccolo.
C-Tenor Sax is first heard on “Cliff Notes”. It gives a positive nod to Chip’s son Clifford, and conjures-up memories of Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring”.
“Crystal’s Nick Nack” acknowledges Chip’s niece Crystal Cala and her son Nicolas.
“Valdez in the Country” is by Chip’s early musical mentor Donny Hathaway, with whom he often sang the above-referenced fraternal hymn.
The vocal arrangement on Chip’s “MLK”, is by producer Kenny M. Here, Chip remembers Dr. Martin Luther King and the holiday that honors him.
“Tsunami After-Prayer”, another original, commemorates natural, and man-made, disaster victims.
“Shadow of Lo”, handpicked by Kenny M, from the Return-To-Forever Band heyday, closes with a mood that fades into the sunset, as all memories do.
