When you fix your ears upon the well-crafted musical layers of Cassettes Won’t Listen, you wouldn’t guess that you are hearing the workings of an individual. You imagine a full band with a chemistry so on point that the music flows into your consciousness effortlessly, ringing with familiarity on one hand, yet something fresh and completely untapped all the same.
Cassettes Won’t Listen is the solo brainchild of Jason Drake. The New York-based multi-instrumentalist and producer created Cassettes Won’t Listen in 2004, complete with fictional personas for each instrument he incorporated into his new endeavor, the latest in a heap of musical monikers he has realized over the years. He introduced the “band” (Kid Lucci on vocals/lead guitar, Doc Torchaos on bass, Jeh Walker on vocals/guitar and Drehke on synth/programming) to cyberspace via the label he co-founded, Dope Lotus Records. Drake amassed a fan base and critical acclaim upon the release of Cassettes Won’t Listen’s EP Nobody’s Moving, convincing all that the sound was the workings of a full band. He reasoned that the live show was put on hold as the band was tucked away in the studio, hard at work on their debut LP.
Fans and critics embraced what they believed to be a full band, yet Cassettes Won’t Listen has now been revealed as the singular workings of producer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Drake. Nobody’s Moving is the latest offering from the artistically innovative collective Dope Lotus Records. The powerhouse digital distribution company IODA recently added Dope Lotus to its roster and just released the Cassettes Won’t Listen EP on iTunes. Napster and Rhapsody, among others. The critically-acclaimed single “Cutting Balloons” has been met with strong support from leading internet radio station WOXY, and reached #1 on the station’s Top 20 charts after just weeks of being added to the rotation. The video for “Cutting Balloons” is currently in production.
Recorded in a penthouse apartment in Tribeca, the sounds enveloped on Nobody’s Moving are a fusion of acoustic and electric guitars, synthesizers, drum machines, turntables and samplers. A self-taught musician, Drake has truly realized a platform for merging his vast range of instrumental expertise. Often the song craft begins with writing songs on guitar, other times the keyboards or a sample. No matter what sparks the inspiration, Drake brilliantly weaves the various elements into a complex and carefully crafted collage of sonic experimentation.
Cassettes Won’t Listen embodies an otherworldly and distinctive blend of electronica and indie rock, with comparisons being drawn to the Notwist, Postal Service and Beck. As co-founder of the Dope Lotus crew, Jason Drake has been creating beautifully neck-snapping beats since he can remember, and is ever-transforming his daily experiences into life soundtracks. He has communicated his productions through various musical personas over the years, the latest being Cassettes Won’t Listen. Jason Drake currently resides in New York City and is the Director of Marketing for the leading independent hip hop record label Definitive Jux, in addition to running Dope Lotus Records.
