Bonemachine grew out of Portsmouth's underground dance/electronic scene. Hackpen asked the band to join the label in 2003. The first single "Another Day Over" was followed by the acclaimed debut album "Vent" in summer 2004, alongside an MP3 EP, released online by Oxford's Shifty Disco Records, which featured a remix by Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
The sound produced by Bonemachine is difficult to label. As a result the press have likened them to a hugely eclectic mix including Radiohead, Massive Attack, Sigur Ros, Suicide, Sneaker Pimps, Depeche Mode, Mansun, Boards of Canada, Primal Scream and even Pink Floyd.
Promoters, it seems, have the same problems as music journalists in placing the band and, consequently Bonemachine have shared the stage with bands as diverse as Lo-Fidelity Allstars, 65daysofstatic, Cranes, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and even the Mission.
The second album is well on its way - we have heard several of the tracks - a different sound perhaps
"bonemachine do something that I can only describe as the black, industrial dub-dance answer to The Beatles double white. Exotic, experimental, but hypnotically insidious…Investigation recommended” –UNPEELED
"‘Vent’ is a mini-album rammed with haunting songs – not in the way that the Daily Mail will tell you that a free CD of melodic power ballads is ‘haunting’, but in a way that you could actually wake up with a cold sweat on, hoping that the sound coming from beneath the bed is a bass line laced with guitars and not something a bit more sinister." Drowned in Sound
"Short but sweet album from men who look surprisingly like pub rockers. One minte they're Radiohead, then Portishead, then they do harmonies together..." Bowback Mag
“"strong sense of melancholy presides over this Portsmouth quartet’s first single – the story of a father dreaming of his lost daughter – which, musically, is as morose as you might expect. It’s beautifully conveyed, mind – sort of like Massive Attack when they were good - with Bonemachine exhibiting more than enough conviction." Jockey Slut
"A haunting and intense debut, this is the story of a father recaling his lost daughter each night in dreams until one day she is finally gone. A dark and persistant beat accompanies the melancholic vocals, lamenting the passing of another day and another lifetime. A flawless production of difficult subject matter." Buzz Mag
“If you miss the days when Radiohead, less concerned with controversies about bastard politicians and controversy, made the most heart wrenching, personal, beautiful music of their generation, then Bonemachine are for you. Described as electronic/rock/alternative/dance, the appeal of Bonemachine rests on more than one level. Although experimental and political, Bonemachine offer us what Radiohead no longer can; the chilled out, relaxing sound of layered guitars and synth, and penetrating vocals are phenomenal. The production is flawless and creates a complex, intense musical experience, yet with the overall appearance of calmness, it truly is beautiful. .... Bonemachine are undoubtedly ready to take the UK by storm.” LOGO
