Three new works by the master of maximalism, Florencio Asenjo.

Florencio Asenjo's latest MMC release, ANGELS DANCING ON A PIN, features 3 works by the composer in which he continues his lifelong push into the realms of maximalism. Asenjo coined the term to describe his method of creating themes to achieve a high density of content in constant change, without exact repetition but replaced with a more substance-based development. "I like when large-scale forms are built on many ideas," writes the composer. "I think that now the general need is for more substance in music."

Florencio Asenjo was born in Buenos Aires, where he studied the various tools of music-making with the Spanish composer Jaime Pahissa. When Asenjo began his musical life, he found overwhelming the monumental amount of repetition that characterized much of Western music; at the same time, he realized that repetition could breed development, and that development need not be mere variations on previous themes but could rather encompass entirely new themes connected aesthetically to the preceding ones.

Angels Dancing On A Pin, the first track on the CD, presents these developments as a canon, while Ubiquities: A Symphony Of Transitions presents them more as simultaneous events, or in the words of the composer, a "confluence of symphonies." The final piece, Images For Clarinet And Orchestra, features the outstanding clarinetist Ales Pavlorek in a partially programmatic work not dissimilar from the great Falla.
