In 1950 China invaded Tibet, a country the size of Western Europe. For over 50 years Tibet has seen the systematic destruction of its culture, religion and environment at the hands of its Chinese occupiers. Over 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a result of torture, execution and starvation. Over 100,000 have made the perilous trek across the Himalayas to a life in exile. In 1994 the Chinese government announced that a railway was to be built across Tibet to ease the way for more Chinese settlers, one of the biggest threats to Tibet today. Work has now begun on the railway. The Tibetan people continue their non-violent struggle for independence and freedom.
