Arturo Stalteri is a Roman pianist and composer who graduated at the Consevatory of L'Aquila and later studied with Gobbi Belcredi, Vincenzo Vitale, Konstantin Bogino and Aldo Ciccolini.
His research, as intepreter and author, has always aimed at highlighting the post-modern sensibility in 20th century music, and the concept of contemporary music as a meeting place between "serious" music and "borderline" music. Though he was classically trained, Stalteri began to be known by the large public with the group Pierrot Lunaire, one of the historical progressive rock bands of the Seventies that mediated successfully between the rock world and the classical world. With this band Stalteri recorded two albums, “Pierrot Lunaire” and “Gudrun”.
As soloist he has recorded “André sulla luna” and “E Il Pavone Parlò Alla Luna” (the latter reissued by Materiali Sonori with the previously unreleased “Racconti Brevi”). Again with Materiali Sonori in 1992 he released the cd “Syriarise”, a work combining two different artistic approaches: an electronic suite with minimalist and ethnic influences and a section dedicated to the piano. This was the first in a long series of projects with the Tuscan record label, which considers Stalteri as one of its most representative artists. 1995 saw the release of “Flowers”, a collection of piano pieces by Debussy, Glass, Way, Sakamoto, Corea and Stalteri himself.
In 1997, in collaboration with the two composers, Stalteri began to work on two new discs dedicated respectively to Philip Glass' and Brian Eno's piano musics. With David Sylvian, Roger Eno, David Torn and Harold Budd he participated in the “Marco Polo” project by Nicola Alesini and Pier Luigi Andreoni. He has been guest artist in works by Alvin Curran, Mario Castelnuovo, Amedeo Minghi, Grazia Di Michele, and in Arlo Bigazzi's cds “Polvere Nella Mente” and “[2]”. He also played in the album by Militia “Elvengamello” and in Paolo Lotti's “Hendrix”, and produced with Arlo Bigazzi Clare Ann Matz's album “Some Secrets”.
In 1998 MP Records released the album by Fabio Liberatori “Empire Tracks”, for which Stalteri wrote and performed three pieces and has recently composed and played three more tracks for the new Liberatori cd “The Asimov Assembly” (“Nightfall” was written with Sonja Kristina, ex vocalist from Curved Air). In 2000 he released “coolAugustMoon”, a Cd dedicated to the music of Brian Eno, with the approval of Eno himself. The new work (2003) is “Rings - Il Decimo Anello” inspired by the Tolkien Trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” and produced by Arlo Bigazzi. Stalteri also composes music for dance and theatre. He is a music critic and radio host for many of Rai Radio Tre, Radio Due and Rai Sat programmes. He is conducting now “Il Terzo Anello” for Rai Radio Tre. Ever since the late '80s has been one of the leading and most rigorous musical experts particularly in the field of experimental music.
