34 Puñaladas was formed in 1998, leading the way for a new generation of guitar and tango singers ensembles.
From the very beginning it focused its attention on tangos inspired by and about prison life, lowlifes and the like, from the 20s and 30s. 34 Puñaladas goes across this dark, forgotten and even forbidden area of the genre with an introspective tone. They dig out a “politically incorrect” repertoire with plenty of stories about drugs, broken women, robbery, violence and troubled love. 34 Puñaladas rescues the tradition and makes its mark when it comes to musical arrangements, staging of the shows and its own compositions.

When they started out, they did the rounds of underground Buenos Aires, performing in different venues, mingling with the environment favoured by independent theater, film and popular music.

In 2002 they released their first cd, Tangos Carcelarios, and they get out of the underground and go into the mainstream. They performed at the main venues and music clubs in Buenos Aires. They also toured the rest of the country, offering many performances.

They get ackowledgement from the audience and from the critics. They received the Premio Clarín in the Tango: New Artist category and were also picked as recipients for the same category by the La Nacion newspaper. Their second cd, Slang, gets nominated for the 2006 edition of the Premios Gardel de la Musica in the category of best group or tango orchestra.

Due to their peculiar repertoire and approach to the genre, they were invited to take part in many prestigious internacional festivals, sharing the billboard with outstanding artists such as Hermeto Pascoal, Marc Ribot, Maria Bethania, Youngchen Lhamo, Rufus Wainwright, Miguel Poveda, Chicuelo, Duquende, Amadou et Mariam, Faiz Ali Faiz and Vitor Ramil.
